The value of recognizing people for their unique skills cannot be overstated. It is a choice we make every day—to diminish someone based on preconceived notions or to uplift them by seeing their strengths. This decision shapes not only our interactions but also the self-perception of those we engage with. Today, I was reminded of this truth during a conversation with a group of NAIT students.

One student shared that his community, the League of Legends (LoL) gaming community, is often viewed as “toxic.” This label, commonly used to generalize gamers in competitive environments, carries a heavy stigma. I decided to press further, probing into his role within the game. As we spoke, he reframed himself in a positive light: he wasn’t toxic—he was a shot caller.

In that moment, he reclaimed his narrative, revealing a side of himself honed through years of effort and perseverance. As a shot caller, he possessed critical team-oriented skills. He understood the nuances of effective communication and the art of coordinating actions to achieve collective goals. These abilities, often overlooked or undervalued in the context of gaming, are the very same that fuel success in business, leadership, and community-building.

This young man’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential within us all. By choosing to see people for what they’re good at, we empower them to see the same. His role in a gaming community, dismissed by some as unimportant, is evidence of his dedication, strategic thinking, and ability to foster collaboration.

When we recognize someone’s strengths, we give them the tools to thrive. In doing so, we also create a culture of respect, understanding, and growth. So, let’s challenge ourselves to look beyond surface labels and discover the incredible abilities each person brings to the table. You never know—you might uncover the next great strategist, communicator, or leader in places you least expect.
